Check out our new metal products!  Glass etching is a process that takes the ordinary to the extraordinary. Glass items become more than functional, a piece of art to look at. Based in Saugatuck, MI, Division 9 Laser Design makes decorative glass for clients with lasers. What We Offer We design decorative glass in the form of mirrors, windows, signs, bourbon bottles, liquor bottles, highball glasses, champagne glasses, and vases. These products make for an intimate, meaningful gift. Additionally, we sell to manufacturers and local businesses to resell as merchandise!  How Glass Etching Usually Works Glass etching works with chemicals or abrasives. Most artists use hydrofluoric acid or ammonium bifluoride to reduce sodium, calcium, and aluminum atoms at the glass surface. One way is to boil glass in 30% Hydrochloric acid solution for 30 minutes before starting. With chemical etching, artists put a Ti-Au bilayer on the glass. To control the angle of facets, they can adjust the thickness of the Ti-Au bilayer. Sometimes, they will use a jewel cutter or something similar to cut the glass. All About Laser Etching
A more modern and environmentally friendly approach to glass etching is laser etching. That is what we do. The computer-controlled method produces minimal waste and is consistent with the design. Glass is made up of silicon and metal. When a CO2 laser hits the glass, the air and moisture between the silica expands until the glass breaks. It's a fast technique compared to other abrasives.
